I used to be the person who made fun of the saying “new year; new me”. It seemed as if the people who made that statement were waiting on a new year to become a better version of themselves. I wondered, “why wait until a new year, why not start today?” It appeared to be a statement for the procrastinator to put off for tomorrow the thing that can be done today. While that may seem true, I now understand why someone may feel like the New Year is a good time to start better habits.
There is something about a new year that makes people feel like they have a fresh start; a clean slate; a day/year to start anew. If that is you, I want to encourage you to GO FOR IT!
If you feel like this is the year for you to make the changes you’ve been wanting to make, GO FOR IT!
If this is the year you decide to make healthier food choices, start working out, and/or lose weight, GO FOR IT!
If this is the year you decide to become a better version of yourself – a better spouse; a better friend; a better mom; a better sister, etc. – GO FOR IT!
If this is the year you decide to start your business, get your certification, finish the degree you’ve started; GO FOR IT!
If this is the year you decide to start regularly attending church; GO FOR IT!
If this is the year you decide to get your finances in order and stop spending unnecessary money; GO FOR IT!
I want to encourage my readers that whatever your “IT” is, pursue it with passion, pursue it intentionally, and most importantly, pursue it with determination. Don’t stop until you get it done!
Personally, I like to start the year off with a list of goals. New Year’s Day has always been a time for me to personally reflect, write out goals, and plan my year. Some people do it before the New Year, but I like to do it on the day. I reflect and think about how I would like my year to be, the changes I would like to make or the things I would like to do more or less of, etc. Generally, I’m a reflective person, so I like to continue this mindset throughout the year, but there’s something about setting my goals and my mind to accomplish specific goals in the year ahead that encourages me. I love to plan things out, give my goals legs and watch myself check them off as the year progresses. It gives me a sense of fulfillment.
Now there is no shame if you had goals in 2017 that you did not accomplish. Just carry those goals over to this year and be determined to get it done! We are all growing and learning in this thing called life. Just remember to be intentional in your growth; because if something is not growing it becomes stagnant and eventually dies. Don’t let that be you.
Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “… I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life…” I want to encourage you to choose LIFE – choose the good, choose to do the right thing, choose integrity, choose the blessing. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE!
“Life is choice-driven; we live and die by the choices we make”
As always, thanks for reading. I hope you have a Happy and Intentional 2018.
